Pilgrimage to Our Lady of Victory

«The pilgrimage to Our Lady of Victory is a secular tradition, that lasts since the decline of the village of Paredes, which takes place every year on 15 of August.
It does not exist, for shore, a date for the beginning of the pilgrimage, although everything indicates that it will have started in the middle of the century XVI when, in 1536, the parish of Paredes is transferred to Pataias. In 1542, due to lack of population in Paredes, the chapel ceases to celebrate the Mass Having ceased to celebrate in that chapel, people were charged to carry on an annual pilgrimage to the chapel of Our Lady of Victory.»

The pilgrimage, also known as “party of the donkeys”, departed from the village of Pataias towards the beach of Paredes, followed by the filarmónica band of Pataias. Along with the image of Our Lady of Victory, followed the Judges and the Angel on horses, riders and horses, donkeys, bicycles, tractors, allegoric vans and other people who had made their way on foot. Also the horses of Quinta do Facho joined the pilgrimage, Emir and Corsária with the charrete, together with some friends and their horses. After the arrival at the chapel, the party took place at the picnic area of Paredes, where we had lunch and spent the afternoon in conviviality.
